In Lilongwe last month, more than a dozen photographers snapped pictures of Dr. Francis Martinson, country director of UNC Project-Malawi, and Malawi’s president, Joyce Banda, in front of a new vehicle that will be deployed as part of the President’s Maternal Health and Safe Motherhood Initiative (SMI).
With funding from the Gates Foundation UNC will collaborate with the Malawian government on the SMI to improve safe motherhood in several ways, from training doctors and nurse midwives and educating village chiefs about safe childbirth to constructing two model maternity waiting homes that will be replicated across Malawi.
